Budgeting In Second Life

People join Second Life for a lot of different reasons, whether it is to make friends, to be creative, or to find love, the list is endless, when it comes to Second Life, one thing is for sure, shopping is always fun.

Second Life is free. You don’t need money to register an account, or to create your avatar, but it does help.

Here are my tips for ways to budget in Second Life, and how to get a few freebies as you go.

Join as many groups as you can, some groups are free, while others charge a fee, a lot of groups are for stores who offer group gifts to their members, always have a look to see what is on offer before you join, especially if it is a group that is going to cost you Linden dollars.

Make the most of your shopping experiences, there are Midnight Mania boards in almost every store, just slap a few while you’re out and about, you never know, you may get lucky, however, some Midnight Mania boards are for group members only.

Lucky Chairs are like the Midnight Mania boards, and may only apply to group members, either way, you sit on a chair when your letter comes up to claim your gift.

Lucky boards are a bit of a waiting game, the boards will each display a series of gifts and a letter, click the board if it displays your letter, once more, check to see if these gifts are for group members only.

Look for stores that offer free mesh bodies and heads, as well as free skins and hair.

Try to keep at least one of your group slots available so that you can change groups when it suits you.

My hair and clothes as shown in these pics are all group gifts, have fun with it, and happy group gift shopping.

My Betty Boop

Second Life is full of surprises and fascinating characters, and I have wanted to create an avatar in the form of Betty Boop for a long time, but I thought that it would be an impossible task, LAQ has always been my go to place for shopping in Second Life, for skins, makeup and bento mesh heads, I recently purchased LAQ’s Ivy head, I loved the whole, big head, wide eyed, doll look, I wasn’t sure what I was going to do with her, so I started out by making a doll avatar, the more I looked at her, the more I could see her potential to become something more, something totally different, it was then that I realised that I had finally found my Betty Boop, I bought her to life in Second Life by adding the right hair, makeup, clothes and jewellery, and now she is complete.

The Original Betty Boop

According to Wikipedia, Betty Boop is an animated cartoon character created by Max Fleischer, with help from animators including Grim Natwick. She was featured in 90 theatrical cartoons between 1930 and 1939. She has also been featured in comic strips and mass merchandising.

The Ramblings Of An Alt

Hi there, my name is Kat, (well it’s not but that’s close enough) and I am Pandora’s alt, so what am I doing on her blog? Well, I want to tell my story about what life is like in Second Life as an alt, by the way, an alt is an alternative account, it’s secondary, an afterthought if you will, maybe even an accident, basically it comes down to this, the creator of Pandora's Second Life account decided to make an alt, for whatever reason, and here I am.

Pandora had two alts before me, their names were BJayy and Sindy, I say were because Pandora decided to delete their accounts and recreate them on her main account, and she left me behind, now that’s just mean, or maybe not, as I am the only alt now, which makes me feel kind of special.

I have payment info on file, lots of Lindens, my profile is up to date, I’m accumulating a very nice inventory, I am logged in on a regular basis, and I consider myself to be luckier than some other alts. Pandora is my only contact, she tells people that it’s because I am anti social, which is simply not true, however that is how she wants it, so it is what it is.

Do I talk to myself? All of the time, do I love myself? Most definitely, Do I take myself seriously? Never, and neither should you.

I know why I‘m here, I am Pandora’s alone time, her me time, when she’s bored and wants to check out the grid undisturbed, that’s where I come in, and I don’t mind, as I said before, I am her only alt now, that is the best part. I am just another aspect of Pandora’s personality and she is an aspect of her creators personality.

Okay, so you’re reading this and you think I’m crazy, because you know who is behind the alt right? Let’s have some fun with this, I ask you, how do you treat your alts? Do they even have a profile photo or Lindens? What about payment info? Do you log them on much, if at all?

This little rant is meant to be very tongue in cheek, and maybe you have learnt something from it, or even got a laugh out of it. Alts were not always accepted in SL, most of them were seen as griefers (someone who harasses others in SL) and troublemakers, hopefully a lot of that is changing, and SL is becoming an even better place for people to lose themselves.

Second Life is what you make it, it is not a game, it is a virtual world, and it’s yours to use, not to abuse, so treat people how you would like to be treated, and remember, whether you are talking to the holder of a main account, or an alt account, that there is a real person behind their avatar, with real feelings and emotions, just like you, yes there are people who behave badly in SL, unfortunately, they are everywhere, ignore them, or report them if you need to, and go on your way, and have fun, it is your world, own it.

My Gothic Monroe

When LAQ launched their version of the beautiful Marilyn Monroe at the 2019 Vintage Fair, it felt as though all of my dreams had come true, for me it was like buying a virtual Barbie Doll that I could play dress up with.

I have made a variety of characters in Second Life from Wonder Woman to Harley Quinn and I am always coming up with new ideas.

Part of creativity is also about reinventing and it is interesting to see how many different looks that you can achieve.

This is my Gothic version of LAQ’s Monroe, I made a copy of the original shape, and tweaked the neck and body, making it slightly shorter, I didn’t make any changes to the face or head, as they have very distinct features.

Monroe is definitely one of my favourites, she has her own personal folder in my inventory, and her own style.

Whoever you are in Second Life, have fun, and just enjoy the fantasy of being you.

Sintiklia Hair Designs

I have been back in Second Life for almost a year and I am still learning about mesh and bento and bodies and heads and even though I don’t always understand how everything works I never give up trying.

Shopping in SL is a fun experience, from the Group Gifts to the MM Boards and Lucky Chairs, there is always something new.

There are many hair stores, but there are also many styles as well, including rigged and unrigged mesh, bangs and add ons, style and colour HUDs, it can get confusing at times.

I have about 300 styles of hair, which may not be a lot for some, but I’m working on expanding my collection, there was a particular look I hated because of the way the hair covered one eye, after all that hard work  with applying makeup, only to cover half of it? It didn’t seem to make sense.

Sintiklia is one of my favourite hair stores, after trying a few demos, I found a couple of styles that changed the way I thought about that look, they are Mia and Delilah, two cute and classy styles, I couldn't decide which one to get so I bought both, I call them my one eyed hair styles, I wear Delilah the most, Sintiklia helped me to be more open to different looks in SL.
